HAPPY TO BE BACK

It has been a while since I have spent any real time here at the Gallery and it is truely different to be back.  Organizing workshops will be my first and main focus.  The workshop calendar will be updated soon with more specific information.

During the next several weeks you will find me outside working in the yard and on this old house to keep her beautiful and in good spirits.  

We also have a few other Great Spirits coming for a visit.  A long time collector of Native American and Southwest Art has decided to downsize and sell a portion of his colleciton.  We will be featuring for sale the works of  R. C. Gorman, Vernon JoJoLa, Ed Morgan and several other famous Artists from the New Mexico area.   This display should be available for viewing mid October, just in time for those "special" Holiday Gifts, please call for a private showing or scheduled open hours.

The Summer Siesta Whirlwind . . .

I thought a siesta meant rest and relaxation - there has been very little of this going on since we began our Harvest Arts Summer Siesta June 15th, 2010.  Greg's surgery was delayed until the 30th but since then it has been a whirlwind.  It was a very difficult decision to close the gallery for several months but looking back it was the smartest thing we did.  We knew the surgery Greg would be having (esophageal vasectomy - removal of part of the esophagus) was a difficult surgery but had  idea how difficult.  To keep our friends and family informed I have been posting on a Barnes Hospital Caring Bridge site - www.caringbridge.org/visit/greggates - please feel free to visit.

I still go by the Gallery and Studio most every day - it is still a wonderful sanctuary for me.  Steve Grzyb has occupied the small green studio during this time to see how he likes having his own shop along with watching the Gallery for me.  I sure hope he doesn't get too attached, I am so ready to get back to my Studio - but it will be a while.

Spending countless hours here in the hospital I thought I would have time to work on the future of the Gallery but that has not been the case.  We are on our second tour here at Barnes and after going home and returning I have realized how valuable these nurses are;  24/7 at home leave very little time for planning the Gallery future.  But I have realized one thing, the friends we made at the Gallery have stayed by our side during this time of need.  Somehow, someway we will work to continue our path and look forward to the new friends yet to me made.

We will not be having the Fall Round-Up this year however a benefit for the MERS Team (Large Animal Rescue) at the Elks Lodge located directly across the railroad tracks from the Gallery on the 28th of August.  Pikn'Likn will be there to entertain and hopefully by then Greg will be up and about so we can again visit with all of you.  Check www.mersteam.org or www.piknlikn.com for further updates.

Summer Siesta at Harvest Arts Gallery

The temperatures are beginning to rise as we look straight ahead to the days of Summer. 

It will be a "Summer Siesta" for all of us here at Harvest Arts.  Effective June 4th we will be closing for the summer.  Our plans and goals are to reopen in the Fall.  As Greg recovers from surgery we will be spending our time sitting by the pond at our home.  Nestled in the woods, poised in nature, I can't think of a better place for Greg to recover. 

 

During the next two weeks will will be discounting ALL the Gourmet Food Items, Wood Wick Candles and Diffusers (great for college students!!), and many other items.  The Artists are beginning to remove their work but there are still great "one of a kind" handmade works of art - some at discounted prices.

We will truly miss the excitement and fun times associated with the Gallery and a HUGE THANK YOU to all the Aritists and Wonderful Customers that have made the Gallery what it is. 

Currently the workshops and classes have been canceled. Several of the Artists plan to host workshops and classes later this summer however please double check with the Artist hosting the workshop.  I will be updateing www.harvestarts.com with more details and information as time progresses.  Please feel free to contact me at harvestarts@aol.com if you have any questions or concerns.

With each phone call I really have to switch gears quickly!!  The workshop phone calls and reservations are coming in - Yippiee!!  Workshops are always something I have wanted to feature here at the Gallery and now "Signature Studios" is finally happening.  I am however realizing that this too is taking it's own direction, just like the Gallery, based on the needs and desires of the customers.  The classes I thought would book up really fast has not received one phone call - shows you how much I know??? 

There have been several surprises along the way. 

#1 How professional and organized some of the Artists are with their workshop program formats.  There is a lot to do to pull a class together, teaching is a whole new avenue for many Artists, especially being on stage, then comes being organized when most Artists just want to hide and be creative.

#2 The support of Dremel Tools - Dremel being one entity of the worlds larges tool manufacture conglomorate Robert Bosch Tools, I really did not expect to get much of a response but, they are wonderful!!!  Starting with a real live Customer Service person that was so very helpful I have spent time talking with Corporate VP's, Regional Sales Managers, and a very determined Local Representative whom has spent many phone call lining up a great opportunity to offer Dremel Workshops here in Eureka Missouri!!! 

Bosch Tools which owns Dremel, Bosch, Skill and Roto Strip would like to offer this type of program for all their tool lines.  For $20 a class, this is great for Dad's and Sons - Mom's and Daughters - Dads and Daughters - Moms and Sons.   If you are interested in something new check out the Workshops and Classes tab located to the right under Photo Albums.  We will be adding new classes regularly, keep checking back or call if there is something special you would like to see us offer.

This Spring has been fabulous!!  It is great to see the familiar faces of repeat customers stopping by to see what is new.  The Grzyb, Frick and Faust Exhibit has really added to the change in seasons.  During the recent Missouri Artisans Association (the Best of Missouri Hands) conference I met several new Artists whose work has been really fun to sell!! 

This coming Friday (April 9th) our Reception for Grzyb, Frick and Faust should be a lot of fun.  The Artists will be here to demonstrate their talents, Ed Belling and Marion with Pikn'Likn' will be here for great music and laughter, and of course beverages and snacks . . . . stop by for a visit . . . . the weather is going to be PERFECT!!!

The Grzyb, Frick and Faust exhibit is a benefit for the ANIMAL HEALTH FOUNDATION - Dr.Donald Walsh - finding a cure for laminitus, a fatal equestiran disease.  Each Artists has donated a very special work of art to be raffled off at the end of the exhibit.

Raffle tickets are $1 each!!! 

Another Monumental Hurdle

Talking to Leslie yesterday we both made a laughable revelation.  Both she and I have taken the Artist's Way workshops - at different times but both most recently.  For those who are not familiar with the Artists Way it involves a lot of writing and making lists.  A lot of lists!!  Eventually you are suppose to go back and review some of those writing and those lists.  The laughable yet amazing part is how the same tasks keep reappearing on those "lists of things to do" lists.  Well, the big one for me was to get the Workshops published on my website.  Actually, that was the first step in creating the workshops so I'm not so sure if the publishing on the web was the real obstacle.  Maybe getting the workshops up and running was the bigger issue BUT !!!  It is done!!  At least there is a big start underway.  Please visit the "Workshop and Classes" link at the bottom of the Photo Album section to the right of this page.  I truly hope you like the initial classes we are offering.  Maybe you will even sign up for one ?? There are great plans for bigger, better and more to come.  We just needed a place to start and scratch through that line on my "things to do"  list.  Just so you know, one of Leslie's "things to do" was sending me pictures to publish for her classes.  I received them yesterday, scratch, scratch.  Wait until you see her new work, I just can not believe it!!  

Steve Grzyb has also taken the Artists Way workshop.  Steve, Leslie and Lanie are the three featured artists in our March "Comfort Your Den in 2010" exhibit.  Steve's amazingly wonderful picture of the Legends Springhouse was on his "list" - scratch, scratch. 

Then there is Lanie. There is something magical about Lanie. I don't think she needs "lists" or if she does she just scratches through them so quickly I don't think the ink has time dry.  Her work also is so amazing, I just can't wait to see what she has worked up for our special event. 

One of the many, if not the best part of owning a Gallery is getting to know the artists.  We are all looking forward to having you come visit us during our next two Friday night receptions to get to know Steve, Lanie and Leslie.  Come see their new works of art, enjoy some snacks and beverages with us and support The Animal Health Foundation "finding a cure for laminitis".

The Comfort of my own den . . .

We made it !!  I'm standing here at the front counter, looking around, can't believe we are finally here. Our January "Comfort Your Den in 2010" undertaking was a lot more than I could have ever imagined.  This was not just moving a few personal belongings, files and computer to the Gallery.  It was going throught 10 years of parden my mouth CRAP!!!  What I didn't realize when I decided to open my personal space, the green studio, to the public and create "Signature Studios" was that I would be going through many many boxes of "stuff" accumulated over the past 10 years - ever since our home burned down in 1999. The little green studio was my saftey net, my world, my nesting and hoarding- or hunting and gathering . . . no sure which.  Well, the time came to move on and "Comfort my Den in 2010" is what I have done. Yestesterday we (Miss Shayna and I) purchased our new bed for the Gallery.  The old blanket thrown on the floor just didn't get it here in the Gallery - but it is back in the Studio waiting for those days we teach and become creative again. 

Going through, sorting, cleaning, pitching (not much!!) revealed to me something totally unexpected.  My own art!!  Having completed only two works of gourd art during the past two years of developing Harvest Arts I have realized how much I miss it.  Now that the Studio is clean and organized maybe I can find not only the "stuff" to be creative with but the time too!! 

Moving on to the Gallery and our next venue - "Comfort Your Den in 2010" with Grzyb, Frick and Faust.  Steve, Lanie and Leslie are amazing and have been so much fun to work with.  With a little pushing (OK, maybe a lot for one!!) they have developed some really new fun creations. 

I think this "Comfort Your Den in 2010" is contageous - hopefully you will be inspired too!!

As the New Year approaches my mind is on what to do to improve the Gallery, the Studio and what I have to offer not only the customers but the Artists as well in 2010. 

It is obvious "The Taste of the Southwest" is very populare here in the "Midwest" !  The interest and excitement over the new lines of mixes for cheeses, spreds, dips and soups we have brought in to compliment the artwork has been a great boost.  I think most are really attracted to the "all natural" and no MSG.  I'm certain there is going to be a lot of Chile Lime Dip for the New Year's parties.  These"hot" sales have truly helped us to pay our bills and maintain a home for the Local Artists.  Again, the "Southwest" flair of mesquite lamps, copper, pottery, clay sculptures, turned wood, paintings and photography were the favorites along with some very creative food baskets.  If the repeat sales continue after the new year like they have already I guess I will have to plan another trip to Sante Fe - OH DARN!!   

Spending the Festive Holiday Hours with all of you during workshops, luncheons and shopping has really made this season go by quickly.   It has also made me realize that we are out of space !! 

Soooooo, For 30 days beginning Friday January, 2010 the Gallery will be closed for remodel, renovations and updates.  The plans are to open small green building behind the Gallery (my personal playroom) into the new . . .

Six uniquely different artistic woodturners from the Festus/Crystal City "Show Me Woodturners" Association will be displaying and selling their work during the months of July and August at Harvest Arts Gallery. 

These men have assembled a large wood lathe to a flat bed trailer in order to provide you with  live demonstrations of how to turn an old chunk of wood into a fabulous work of art.
